A wider net, not part of the main decision — places where the stay is the point. Each shows the realpublic-transport route, time and cost from Tokyo (these are usually pitched "X minutes by car"). All have air-conditioning and fit the five of us in one booking; an in-unit private bath is a bonus here, not a must.

Futtsu, Chiba — the Boso coast

Tokyo → Kimitsu → Uchibo Line to Kazusa-Minato, then a 12-minute walk or a ~¥1,000 taxi

Cheapest and the only one you can reach without a taxi — but the Uchibo Line is slow and hourly, so travel light.

Shinkansen Tokyo → Takasaki → Maebashi, then a Nagai bus ~32 min (~¥550) or a short taxi

Practical — it's in flat city foothills, not up the mountain, so the last mile is a short bus or taxi.

Lake Kawaguchi north shore (Oishi), Yamanashi

Highway bus Shinjuku → Kawaguchiko (~2h), then a ~17-minute taxi (~¥3,000–4,000 per cab) up to Oishi

The longest, and the hilltop last mile is effectively a taxi — budget the cab.
