Tateyama Kurobe alpine route
The alpine route crosses the Northern Japan Alps between Toyama and Nagano, linking cable cars, a tunnel trolley bus, and a ropeway. Kurobe Dam, at 186 metres the tallest in Japan, sits in the middle of the crossing. The 2026 season runs from mid-April to the end of November, so early July is open — the spring snow corridor is long gone by then, and it’s green-alpine season instead.
Crossing the whole route is a day in itself: a couple of hours of pure riding, but realistically six to eight with the stops and waits along the way.
Getting there from Shibuya
to the route from the west, via Toyama (Tateyama entrance) — about 3 hr 36 min door to door, about ¥14,620 one way
Shibuya → Tokyo → Toyama → Tateyama
This reaches the western (Tateyama) entrance, the better side if you mean to cross the whole route rather than just see the dam.
The Toyama fare is from a fare table that reproduces the JR chart, not a JR first-party page, and the Chiho Railway is a private line not covered by JR passes. Confirm both before booking.

to Kurobe Dam, via Nagano (eastern entrance) — about 4 hr 15 min door to door, about ¥14,810 one way
Shibuya → Tokyo → Nagano → Ogizawa → Kurobe Dam
This is the shortest way to the dam itself, but it's still over four hours of trains and buses each way — a lot for a three-year-old in one go.
The Nagano–Ogizawa bus and the tunnel bus are not JR services and aren't covered by a JR pass. The route's season is confirmed open in July, but verify the day's segment timetable on the official site before locking an itinerary.
